Step Right Up! The Tomberry Tomato! World’s Smallest!

So there I was, looking around the produce of my little corner market, and I saw it, about 6 boxes stacked up in a little corner next to some deli deli pickles below the usual boxes of blåbår och hallon bår (blueberries and raspberries)…. Cute little Tomberry® tomatoes! (Yes, I was excited about something I never knew existed)

I was so amazed and excited I looked around to make sure I didn’t flag the interests of other shoppers…. These were ALL mine! I’ve never seen such a thing! I immediately bought these up and rushed home… sure they were a little small for the dish I was planning to make but who cares, they were a novelty item as far as I was concerned…

Where did they come from? Is this some crazy science cultivate? And least importantly: Do they taste good?

I read everything there is online about these little fellows (which is not much) and learned a bit…. Apparently they are cultivated in the Netherlands by ‘The Greenery’ and distributed in the UK and ‘continental’ Europe by Eminent Food BV. So how did they end up in a chain corner market in Sweden that often doesn’t have all the fresh herbs I need amongst other things? (By the way, Sweden is not continental Europe my American peeps). Well, I am trying to get an answer for that, but until then, here’s the run down:

The Tomberry® is a tomato, assumingly called so as it is a tomato that looks like a berry… get it? Tomatoe + berry (If that is not the reason, I will be very sorely disappointed with some guy named Tom). They range in size from about .5cm to 1cm… and no I will not convert this measurement to Americounting (mother), it will just confuse you more. You can choose red or yellow, and apparently they were marketed in hopes to appeal to children…. so of course I would like them ☺.

They are available from the second week in April well into October, says the distributor, and last about a week from harvest.

Tomberries are a wild strain! For all those readers who are like me and lack a green thumb that means: You can grow them! They are not hybrids or anything engineered so save some seeds and plant in your home. I read chat room posts where people have attested to this, so it’s true and not some corporate trickery. Mother nature is a wonder, I tell’ya.

From all my reading, I have gathered that these cuties made their premiere at popular UK grocery chain Sainsbury’s in 2007 and then the references online quickly died after about 2009…

but here it is 2011 and I find boxes hidden in a corner store all the way up north here in Stockholm: random but awesome. I shall investigate further… enjoy the pictures!
